Trend Watch: China Focuses its “Soft Power” on Brazil

China has historically capitalized on excellent soft power skills – the ability to achieve what one wants via attraction versus coercion.   According to a July report from NPR, in recent years the Chinese have stepped up their efforts to share the country’s culture and education throughout the world. Today, there is a particular focus on Brazil.

The report, titled China and Brazil Warm up Business, Culture Ties, stated “Brazil now exports so much to the Chinese that China has surpassed the United States to become Brazil's largest trading partner. But the Chinese say Brazilian businessmen know very little about their country.”

According to the Pew Research Center, Brazilians generally have a favorable view on China.  However there is tension around Chinese imports into Brazil and a commonly held perception that the quality of Chinese-made goods is poor.  The Chinese business community is working hard in Brazil to try to change those perceptions, primarily through exposure to Chinese culture.
